One Happy Hook… what does it mean?

One Happy Hook. It makes sense when you think about in crochet terms- if you know anything about crochet. Crochet means “hook” in French and that’s what my magic little wand looks like, a hook. If you didn’t know that, now you do! You’re welcome!

Little known fact to non-crocheters is that fun crocheters call themselves Hookers. Yes, that’s right. (LET GO OF YOUR PEARLS- it’s not like that!) I desperately wanted to call my shop “The Happy Hooker,” but when I thought about the Google search results that would bring up, I puked in my mouth a little and moved on.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. Think… think… think… well, I am just one person, as far as I know; generally, I’m pretty happy, and I use a hook- bing, bang, boom! One Happy Hook it was. OHH! (It also has the best abbreviation.)

So, that makes sense for the crochet part of the business. Let me now tell you a little bit about that. I started crocheting in highschool. I just made scarves and wasn’t very good at it, but I kept with it. I put down my hooks when I went to college in Chadron, NE and didn’t pick them back up until I was pregnant with my first child- a whole 15 years ago! I feel soooo old…

I began with a beautiful blue blanket for him, then starting doing more.. and more… and more. Next thing I knew, I was creating hats, dolls, scarves and more for craft fairs. Word of mouth grew amongst my friends and I was asked to make plushies for their littles! The things I made were cute- a bit rough, but cute. As you know, with practice, comes skill. Now I can hook a hat with my eyes closed! Ok, I haven’t, but I am usually watching a movie while I crochet, so that’s like the same thing.

I opened my Etsy shop under OHH in 2021. Now, 4 years later… I’ve expanded my creativity toolbox.

I’ve always loved art- drawing, painting, enjoying it.. Art brings so much to the world and what a sad, dull place it would be without it. I’ve never found myself to be particularly good at it, much to my chagrin.

But a lot has changed… In the past 15 years, I had 2 sons, got divorced, bought a new house, changed jobs numerous times, dated and broke up with another guy who was not right for me, lost pets, got new pets, fell in love with an amazing 6’7” bearded man…

and most importantly- I found myself.

I found who I am supposed to be- all the bells and whistles, weird quirks, and loud laugh.

And that UNLOCKED my creativity. It’s like my brain sighed and said “ah, there we are” and BOOM- new skills unlocked!

I started drawing fun, goofy, little goober guys, and then received an iPad for Christmas and One Happy Hook became more than just yarn art. So… why did it stay One Happy Hook if it’s not just crochet? Because the hook brings you back.

Really, though, it’s because I love the name.. and I’m still just one person (as far as I know), I’m VERY happy, and I still use my hook.. I just added a stylus to the mix.

Well, that’s my story. That’s it. Nothing more to see here, folks. OHH, JUST KIDDING (See what I did there? OHH? Love it)!

I’m wearing one of my designs today! It’s an amazing DRESS with an equally amazing ALIEN and UFO pattern! It’s so comfy and cute! You can get one, too. It’s in my RedBubble shop.
